On the 9th day of Navaratri in Benares we all went at first light one morning for blessings

from the Ganges. All week long I'd seen dead bodies and animals and all sorts of who knows

what floating around it, so I was never really eager to just dive in and go for a swim. That

morning the thought never came, that is, until I started walking in barefoot and wondering

what I was going to step on next. In India you really do just have let go and have faith. It's

nice that way. No choice. Especially with Maa and Swami standing right there.

So I walked out maybe 30 feet -- only as far as it took for the water to be deep enough, and

dipped in all the way under 3 times while chanting Gayatri. Then back to Maa on the banks,

thinking whew, made it, I didn't step on a bone or piece of glass.

Maa said, "Great! Did you do it 3 times and pray for Devapriya too?"

Yikes. Selfish boy, I thought on my way back out to do it again for Devapriya and everyone

and everything and everywhere else I could think of or ever imagine.

Jai Maa Gange !!!
