Guest guest
Thank you so much for the wonderful Ganga stories!!!!! I loved your story about taking a "dip" in Ganga Ma, Devanath! One great memory I treasure (and luckily have photos to remind me of) is chanting the Rudram above the river and watching a huge orange sun rise above Ganga Ma ..then the lines of sadhus, also in orange, making their way along the shore to bathe. I remember this feeling of not being sure whether this was a dream or really "real". The major auspicious bathing day in 2001 was the day of the horrific earthquake in Western India...when we went in to bathe, the atmosphere was so odd...as though everything in Nature was holding its breath. The river was a peculiar shade of yellowish grey almost like mercury, all the birds stopped singing at once and the camels and donkeys that you see along the riverbank became very nervous. There was such stillness! No one was making a sound (unlike other bathing days when you might see families frolicking and splashing each other with Ganga water); everyone seemed totally focused and almost somber...especially the sadhus. Later that evening, we learned of the earthquake on the other side of the country. sadhvi
Guest guest
i have little story about the Ganga river. the first time i went to india was in 1994 in december. i remember being in mayapore and the Ganga was flowing past. it was evening and i went down to offer obeisances to her. i splashed water on my head and chanted my japa. An elderly man with three horizontal lines on his forhead came beside me and kept encouraging me to submege, but i was hesitant since i could see from my travels all manner of stuff entered this river and my mind was convinced that even tho it was holy the water would not be good. He said i was using my mind not my heart. i was looking at the Ganga in a material way and not with my spiritual eyes. so i took a leap of faith and enterd the waters. when i surfaced i could see three dolphins come up for breath. they appeared pink in the setting sun. i felt a surge of awe,love.... and humility. still i have far to go in my appreciation and understanding. but i wont doubt, thanks to Ganga Ma. !
