Guest guest
Namashkar Neelay : i can not pinpoint the source of these verses at this time nor their exact meaning but i am sure our most respected Sunderji will provide us with the exact translation and the source of these verses. Also, i have a feeling there is some error in transliteration wjhile quoting these verses . i will make a crude attempt t translate these verses - i am just learning Samskritam all over again. first verse akarah peetavarnashcha rajoguna samudbhavah ukarah satvikah shuklo makarah krishnatamasah as is obvious , this verse is explaining the Charateristics of the three letters A (aakarah) , U ( Ukaraha) and M ( Makarah) and link it to the three gunas of sattva, rajas and tamas! (MATERIAL MODES OF NATURE) As per this verse , The letter A in the cosmic mantra Aum is of yellow color( peeta varanasha) and full of rajas .( qualities like Kama, krodha etc - in chapter 3 of BG these qualities of Rajas are explained .) The middle Letter U is full of Sattwic qualities and is of white color . (shuklo) White always represents Purity , clarity and Goodness- that is what 'U' reprsents - and lastly the Letter 'M' represents Black color ( krishna) and is full of Tamas or darkness . Then the other two verses go on to explain that although individually the letters may reprsent the three gunas ( RAJAS, TAMAS, SATTWA) BUT when Joined together (idamekam samupanna) they are fukll of Light and knowledge ( jyotihsvarupam ) akare cha ukare cha makare cha dhananjaya idamekam samutpanna-montu jyotihsvarupakam and the final verse The cosmic mantra (omkarah) helps you to reach the ultimate destination ( paramam padam) that of Brahmajnana - individually each letter stands for different things -for example - UOR UKARAH STANDS FOR SOMA ( NECTAR) akare shchyarkasamyuktah ukarah somasamyutah makaro bahnisamyukta onkarah paramam padam Members , forgive me - i tried but i failed! Maybe sri subbuji or Dr.yaduji can come and help with the actual meaning of these verses. However , i have read many explanations of the 3 syllables in the Cosmic Mantra 'Aum ' 1)A waking state (jagrata avasta) U dream state ( swapna avasta) M SLEPP STATE (sushupta avasta) The entire Cosmic symbol along with the crescent and dot stands for the last avasta - Turiya or Samadhi ! ( i think this is is in one of the upanishads - i cannot readily recall ) 2) The THREE LETTERS REPRESENT present three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter, while the entire symbol represent all creation together with the Creator. TRYALINGA TITA ! 3)tHE THREE etters correspond to the three tenses - past, present and future - while the entire symbol stands Aum transcends all Time ! TRIKALA TITA! 4) The three letters also reprsent Brahma , Vishnu and Siva and the entire symbol stands for Brahmnan! and the member has posted in these verses the three letters also reprsent the three gunas of Rajas, tamas, and sATTWA and reprsents 'Gunatita' - the one who is beyond Gunas! And who is this 'Gunatita' None other than our beloved Ishta nIshta SRI KRISHNA PARAMATMA ! Harihi Aum!

Akara is of (Pita) yellow colour and is said to be of Rajo-Guna; Ukara is of white colour and of Sattva-Guna; Makara is of dark colour and of Tamo-Guna. =================================================== The other two verses are expressed in different words in Yogachudamani upan. : http://www.celextel.org/108upanishads/yogachudamani.html (Eng.) http://sanskrit.gde.to/doc_upanishhat/yogachud.itx (Sansk.) Onkara is the Highest Abode, or state. The first quarter of the sloka has to read: akarashchaarkasamyuktah....(akaaraH+cha+arka....=akaarashchaarka...) There is a Name for Lord Shiva 'Soma-SUrya-agni-lochanaaya NamaH'. The one who has the moon, the sun and the fire for His (three) Eyes. There could be some more deep meanings for the Sun, Moon and Fire. For example, akara is associated with waking: In the waking the vyavahara is done with the light from the Sun. ukaara is the dream state where the light is the mind (moon is associated with the mind, chandra is the adhidevata for manas, in Purushasukta 'chandramaa manaso jaayata..'moon manifested from the manas of the Virat Purusha' and hence is the devataa for mind (consider the word 'lunatic'). I am unable to suitably link fire with makaara, the sleep state. The above is just a conjecture, not based on any corresponding literature on the original mantra quoted. Someone could come up with deeper and accurate meaning. Pranams, subbu
