Guest guest
First let me than the List moderators ( i am sure our beloved Sunder- ji had a big hand in this ! ) for unearthing the source of these three verses ! i also felt proud that with my rudimentary knowledge of Samskritam i was able to unravel the meaning of the first verse. my translation was pretty close to the one provided in Tejobindo upanishad. but for a deeper eaning , we really need to do 'aum ' to experience this tattwa! For those of you who are interested in the relationship between the Three Gunas and Aum, i would rcommend they should read chapter 3 of BG. As far as Subbuji's interpreatation of the third verse is concerned , what can i say - it is wonderfull. (akara is associated with the Sun. ukara is associated with the Moon and makaara is associated with Fire. Onkara is the Highest Abode, or state.) Then subbuji goes on to add ( There is a Name for Lord Shiva 'Soma-SUrya-agni-lochanaaya NamaH'. The one who has the moon, the sun and the fire for His (three) Eyes. There could be some more deep meanings for the Sun, Moon and Fire. For example, akara is associated with waking: In the waking the vyavahara is done with the light from the Sun. ukaara is the dream state where the light is the mind (moon is associated with the mind, chandra is the adhidevata for manas, in Purushasukta 'chandramaa manaso jaayata..'moon manifested from the manas of the Virat Purusha' and hence is the devataa for mind (consider the word 'lunatic'). I am unable to suitably link fire with makaara, the sleep state. ) Well, subbuji, as you know , The moon , sun and fire have their own unique place in Hatha yoga - the sun and the moon reprsenting the Ida and pingala nadis and fire i think reprsents the 'KUNDALINI' SHAKTI! when the third eye is opened, Kundalini travels to the Sahasara chakra in the crown of the head! That is the beauty of 'aumkara' saadhna for it helps you to reach the ultimate abode of Brahmajnana! (parama padam) Now here is another explanation "Thus in AUM (AUM) the first letter A stands for this reality, the self, as underlying and manifesting the illusory material world of the waking state . U represents the dream and the psychic or astral worlds, and the last letter, M, denotes the absolute self underlying the chaotic state and represents all the unknown, the deep sleep . Thus AUM means the underlying reality behind the scenes, the eternal truth, the indestructible self that one is, and when AUM is chanted one must throw the body and mind into the true self and melt into the reaT atman or 'pure consciousness" now read this : "While chanting AUM one should meditate on the meaning attached to it, as follows: I am the light of lights; I am the sun; I am the real, real sun; the apparent sun is my symbol only . [in dreams we see objects not by the light of a lamp, nor by the light of the moon, sun, or stars, and yet we see them . If without light we cannot see, then with what light do we see light?] It is the light of my real self; itis the light of my atman, and it is my light that makes everything visible in my dreams." (sanskrit.gde.to/all_txt/om1.txt - 42k - Cached) So in all the three states (waking, dream and sleep states) how do we see the reReality not with the radiance from the light of the sun, moon or fire but by the light of lights, our own self! 'Aum' Guruji used to say is the Ultimate saadhana and even BG AND UPANISHADS RECOMMEND IT! Om is the bow; the atman is the arrow; Brahman is said to be the mark. It is to be struck by an undistracted mind. Then the atman becomes one with Brahman, as the arrow with the target." (Mundaka Upanishad) OM TAT SAT! Actually while writing the above post i thought of the 'svayamjyoti braahmanam' of the Brihadaranyaka upanishad and you have brought out its main content.
