Guest guest
Something that Sri Nairji wrote severa posts ago make me think long and hard .... Nairji wrote with a child like innocence (From here let us go to day-dreams. I am in the Middle-East right now day-dreaming a fantastic dinner at a fine restaurant in New York with my girl-friend. My memories of NY and the sweetheart's image are the mateiral the day dream is made of. With what sense organ am I seeing it?] Call iot a day dream or call it a fantasy or even call it wishful thinking - these are all 'real' at least for the moment these thoughts arise ! Which brings me to another incident that is often quoted in the life of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagvadapada . Do you all remember that famous/infamous debate between Mandana Mishra and our beloved Jagadguru Adi Shankara ? At some point in that debate , Mandana Mishra's wife Bharati Steps in and challenges to Sri Adi shankara that in order for the discussion to be truly meaningful, how an ascetic (brahmachari)like Shankra havea complete understanding of Life or any philosophy without ever understanding all aspects of life including LOVE ( CONJUGAL , EROTIC, MARRIED LOVE ETC ETC . ) l ADI SHANKARA EXCUSES HIMSELF FROM THE DEBATE FOR A MONTH TO EXPERIENCE THIS ASPECT OF NON-BRAHMACHARYA LIFE . It is believed that Shankara enters the body of King Amaeru of Kashmir who had died in a hunting expedition in the forest. In this role as king Amaru , it is believed our YOUNG aSCETIC seems to have experienced or indulged in all sorts of Love pasttimes and even composed a poetic work called 'Amaru Shatakam' which is a great treatise on all aspects of Love, i am told it contains lot of religious sentiments guised under the so called 'love' sentiments. AFTER THIS SO CALLED 'DREAM' EXPERIENCE , ADI SHANKARA CAME BACK TO REALITY AND WENT ON TO WIN THE DEBATE WITH MANDANA MISHRA. well, i do not know how far this story is 'credible but i for one know that Bhatruhari, the famous poet , philosopher and king , wrote'shringara shatakam' first and then went on to write 'Vairagya shatakam . ' Our own beloved Lord shiva , a yogi , an ascetic , has professed his love to beloved Parvati in many shiva Agamas which makes me believe that out of Kama ,the more enduring 'Prema' is born . ( subbuji - that is the explanation of the 'fire' - the tanasic sentiment) Well, to a paramajnani, all states are real - dream, waking and sleep ! so , who wrote Amaru shatakam? regards
