When one's perspective is limited to his own well, it is difficult to fathom

what's going on in the greater ocean outside. Most peoples of the world

depend on alternate calendar systems to regulate their lives apart from the

Christian calendar.

For example here in Malaysia now, half the population is observing the

dawn-to-dusk Ramadhan fasting month based on the Islamic calendar. This is

strictly enforced. This is the month when the Government machinery moves at

half-pace, and religious and spiritual activities are emphasised. At the

same time, the Chinese here are gearing up to herald the Year of the Dragon.

You can see the build-up and icons everywhere. The Hindus use the Vedic

calendar to regulate their festivals, samskaras, birth/death anniversaries

etc.

And of course, the western calendar is used for business as usual.

Still, as Basu Ghosh Prabhu said, millions of rural folks across the face of

Asia, are carrying on with life regardless of the western calendar. They

have always depended on their traditional calendar systems. They never lost

a moment's sleep over Y2K.

Your servant,

Goloka Candra dasa
