Yes, my son went through basic training in the Marine Corp and maintained his vegetarianism. Lost a lot of weight, but so did all the recruits. I did make sure the recruiter sent a letter with him for his trainers so they knew his vegetarianism was on religious grounds, and took the liberty of penetrating the bureaucracy at Parris Island and speaking personally to the Sgt Major in charge of the six mess halls there about diet and vegetarianism. I sent a letter to the Camp Commander after he finished basic, thanking him and pointing out specifically which trainers my son had and glorified them for their understanding. At that time, their was no vegetarian field ration, but they would make special brown bag lunches for him when they were in the field. Since then , the military has produced a vegetarian field ration, which doesn't suck any worse than any of the others :-) That has made things a lot easier.
