Seems like we have a lot of preaching to do in Nadia District - we'd better

co-operate. What do you say? Seems like the common enemy of all of us is

ignorance.

Dogged by evil eye, 4-year-old girl wedded to a dog!

-------------------

Anju, in her bridal finery was wedded with all traditional rituals.

So, what's the big deal? Well, she is just four years old and the

groom is a dog.

Anju, the youngest daughter of Subal Karmakar, was married off to a

mongrel, 'dressed' for the occasion in blue and white cotton 'clothes'

at Khordah Mohanpur village under Haringhata police station in Nadia

district.

Amidst the blowing of conch shells, the girl, dressed in a red

Benarasi sari, garlanded a drowsy, dun coloured 'groom' on Monday

evening. The dog belonging to a relative of the girl's family was

accompanied by five 'baratis'.

Karmakar, a government employee, said his daughter "had to be married

to a dog to ward off the evil eye."

"After she was born, she cut her first tooth when she was only eight

months, she broke her arm when she was two years old, almost drowned

six months later and burnt her legs accidentally in the kitchen just

five months ago," Karmakar said. "All these were considered

inauspicious by my family and a result of the evil eye on Anju."

A similar marriage had taken place in the family during Anju's great

grandfather's time for similar reasons, he said.

"I've never heard of such an incident before," a startled sub-

divisional officer Madhumita Roy said today when contacted.

She said she had been informed of the marriage by block development

officer Gautam Biswas.
