I.e. people may have gotten better because they were made to think about and talk about the stressful events a great deal. That's what desensitization therapy is (at least partly) about. The drugs apparently produced some additional benefit, but simply was bringing the stressful events out in the open, and allowing the related emotions, thoughts, as well as verbal (and presumably written) expressions was also very therapeutic in itself.
