I do not propose this as a conclusive answer but postulate the following:

 

There is a chain of mountain--the Western and Eastern Ghats that have a

terminus in South India as the level of the ocean rises and falls then the

ridges of lower mountains get covered by water or are uncovered. So what

looks like a bridge is actually a mountain ridge. Where I live in North

Carolina there is the Blue Ridge Parkway, a road which runs along the top

ridge of a line of mountains for several hundred miles.

 

Such a land bridge (now submerged) is said to have existed between North

America and Siberia at the Bering Straights. During the Ice Age the ocean

was much shallower (I recall from my days with the BI in San Diego that it

was shallower by several thousand feet) but as the ice melted the water rose

and covered the passage.

 

Just a thought.
