Legend as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge's age is also almost equivalent." So it seems according to this site that the official declaration is that it is a man made sunken bridge stretching 18 miles. I suppose it would only take some archeological research to find out the veracity of that statement. Still 18 miles is a far cry for 100 yojanas in length. And according to research that Sadaputa did the best fit for a yojana for astronomical calculations, after comparing various lengths proposed for a yojana, was a length between 7 and 8 miles. Also the claim is that the bridge is almost 2 million years old whereas my understanding was that Rama appeared near the end of Treta yuga not the beginning, hence only about 900,000-1,000,000 year ago. Another possibility is that it is a bridge to Ceylon but not to Lanka. We read in ancient historical accounts of ancient travellers who visited India of the impressive engineering works that the Rajas had done. Extensive irrigation systems, fortresses, etc. So this could just be a typical causeway of that era. More grist for the mill.
