Independent from nondevotee society. Certainly one entity can be independent of another entity without falsely claiming or futilely attempting to be independent of Krsna and His energies. >Where could one find any references in the sastras, where the devotees of the Lord >would separate themselves so much from the society they where living in, even if >that society would be based temporarily on other materalistic values - did Krsna >lost control about one part of human society in favor of another. >Just some thoughts of mine. There is benevolent purpose to separating from secular society. One reason is that it makes for a stronger society of devotees, a society uninfluenced or minimally influenced by the opposing values of materialistic society at large. Another reason is that it demonstrates a distinct contrast from the rest of society, or in other words, a very real--not merely theoretical--example of a superior way of life. That then is preaching by example. So it's not just for our own selfish spiritual lives but for preaching that devotees should become self-sufficient, independent, and Krsna conscious. Some humble understandings of mine. --gkd
