Kumbha Mela - the Millennium Event

Over twenty million pilgrims will take a full dip in the

ice-cold water of Ganga in Allahabad, India, during the freezing cold

early mornings of January 2001. Strange? Please read on!

 

A special astrological constellation of Sun in Capricorn

and Jupitor in Aries happening once in twelve years is the

time for Kumbha mela. This special festival occurring as

the very first event of a millennium happens once in

THREE HUNDRED Years. So the upcoming Kumbha mela at

Allahabad from January 9 to February 24, 2001 is

very special and rare.

 

In 1977, Srila Prabhupada personally participated in Kumbha

Mela and taught us to carry forward his mission. The most important

purpose of Kumbha mela is Sadhu-sanga - association of devotees.

devotees give their association by glorifying Lord Krishna and by

distributing prasadam.

 

Since Kumbha mela is the largest human gathering on the planet,

ISKCON is organizing massive prasadam distribution.

 

In Kumbha mela 1989, when the pilgrims were shivering after

their ice-cold bath in the Sangam, ISKCON distributed

thousands and thousands of plates of hot prasadam.

The prasadam distribution was the 'talk of the Mela'.

 

This Kumbha mela also, ISKCON is planning a massive food

distribution. We intend to distribute 6,000 plates of

prasadam on each of the 44 days of the mela. A full plate

of prasadam consisting of chappati, rice, dahl, subji and

halwa will cost Rs. 20/-. So we need to raise Rs. 52,80,000

(apprx. US$ 115,000).

 

In the Vishnu Smriti it is said:

"The goddess of fortune, Lakshmiji,

resides in those who are charitable".
