Forgive me, but there may be two possibilities here: 1) You don't

understand what Srila Prabhupada intended to convey, or 2) You understand

what is meant, but you feel that the sentence doesn't convey it properly.

 

If one, the meaning is simply that the happiness attendant to serving the

Lord causes ecstatic symptoms (part of the "happiness" in this case) that

hinders the discharge of the service itself. Then the servant deprecates

the ecstasy because the Lord will no longer be servied properly.

Illustration in verse 202.

 

If two, then the problem seems to arise because the "that" is not snug up

agains the thing it refers to -- the happiness, not the service. If you

want to see the happiness in service as one unit -- happiness-in-service --

that solves the problem of "that" referring to the wrong thing, but it

opens the question of what "it" refers to. If you've subsumed service into

a compound, how can it serve as an antecedent? I suppose all this would be

reconciled if we simply said

 

Such unadulterated love is exemplified when the lover deprecates her

happiness if it hinders her from discharging her service.

 

The question is if the original sentence is really problematic enough to

warrant a fix. What do you think, Maharaj?
