‘Pandavas’ to join Tom and Jerry on Toon TV

Farida Shaikh

Mumbai/Chennai, June 23

CARTOONS WILL soon get an epic touch as TV screens come alive with Pandavas

— The Five Warriors and Sinbad—Beyond the Veil of Mists. Come September,

Yudhisthir, the wise one and Arjuna, the ace archer will vie for popularity

with the spinach-chewing Popeye and boisterous Tom and Jerry.

Produced by Chennai-based Pentamedia Graphics, and being aired by Cartoon

Network, these full-length animation films have elaborate sets and

action-filled war scenes. Pandavas won the National Award for best English

feature film 2000, and the second best animation feature film at the

Vancouver Effects and Animation Festival, 2001.

For Pentamedia director K Srinivasan, it’s all about bringing India’s

heritage to today’s children “in a format they will find entertaining and

fun”.

According to Dr V Chandrasekharan, CMD of Pentafour Graphics, Sinbad was

made on a turnkey solution provider basis for US-based Improvision

Corporation and raked in $ 13 million. Pandavas, made for Indian company

Grips Animation, grossed about the same amount.

Says Anshuman Mishra, MD, Turner International India, “The acquisitions are

a big leap forward in Cartoon Network’s localisation strategy to

increasingly contextualise our content for Indian audiences.”
