Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has allotted a 1.05 hectare plot of land on the prestigious Leningrad Prospekt to the Moscow chapter of International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) for the construction of the Vedic Centre. Alfred Ford, grandson of the US automobile magnate late Henry Ford, has promised to finance the construction of the Vedic Centre, which besides a temple would have museum of ancient Indian religious culture, Yoga centre, a compact theatre and vegetarian cafe, said Sergei Andreeyev chief of the local ISKCON chapter. Russian chapter of ISKCON was registered in 1988 and has over 300 local branches all over the country. Moscow alone has about 10,000 Russian followers of Lord Krishna. The first Krishna temple was opened in 1990 in an old building of a technical school, which under the city master plan would be pulled down for the construction of new apartment blocs.
