Kumbha Mela In Ujjain

Dear Maharajas, Prabhus,

This year, in the month of April and some part of May (an astrologically

very auspicious period with Jupiter in Leo), the 12-yearly Maha-Kumbhamela

will take place in the ancient and holy city of Ujjain,formerly known as

Avanti.While there are several refences to this city in the S.B.and other

vedic literatures, the most interesting for Vaisnavites is:

 

"Concealing Their innately perfect knowledge by Their humanlike

activities, those two omniscient Lords of the universe, Themselves the

origin of all branches of knowledge, next desired to reside at the school

of a spiritual master. Thus They approached S€nd…pani Muni, a native of

K€s… living in the city of Avant…."

Close to the ashram of Sandipani Muni, where Lords Krishna and Balaram

studied and mastered all branches of knowledge in sixty four days,Iskcon

is setting-up a camp under the auspices of Vrindavan,Delhi,Mumbai, Gujerat

and Indore.Srila Prabhupada desired that we properly utilize the

oppurtunities presented by Kumbhmelas for preaching.

 

Situated on the banks of the Shipra river,Ujjain is located only 60km.

from Indore, and is easily accessible by rail and good roads.The nearest

airport is Indore.Other cities near Ujjain are Bhopal,and Baroda.

 

Iskcon Padayatra will be camping at the Iskcon site throughout and there

will be scholarly discouses both for devotees and the public by senior

devotees.Cultural Programs, spiritual exhibitions etc. will be some of the

highlights.BTG India have set a target of 1,00,000 magazines during this

period!

13th April Mesha Sankranti

22nd April Amavasya

4th May Vaisakha Purnima

 

Accommodation: will be in tents

 

Registration:There will be no charge for devotees bringing letters from

their respective authorities. Religious activities such as giving charity

performed in Ujjain during this period bestow good fortune and

spiritual merit upon the performer.

We have a very ambitious programme of distribution of full Prasad to

whoever visits our camp,and to distibute books at susidised rates,as well

as to render other services to the pilgrims.Any contrbutions will be

welcome.

 

We shall be updating this information in future issues of this

newsletter,and relating the history and importance of Kumbha-Mela etc.

 

In the meantime, we really do hope that you can come for this Kumbhamela

and make it a success.
