Guest guest
Dear Prabhus, For devotees who are sick of this kind of harassment, I suggest a more aggressive approach. It is easy to put a Pseudonym as a return address, but not easy to hide the actual origin of the email. With the proliferation of free email, anyone can open a new account in a couple of minutes. Conversely, you can shut down a SPAMmer with just a couple of minutes work. There are only a few who choose to attempt to pollute the general population with blasphemous raves and not take responsibility by hiding in behind fake or hijacked addresses. With swift action we can reduce their numbers. Of course, the right to dissent is an important part of any society's well being. However, irresponsible spamming with no regard for the victim is not. 1) Immediately forward the email to abuse , abuse (AT) AOL (DOT) COM or abuse@ whatever the domain name is. You will probably get a automatic response which will include another address to complain to. Forward the email to that address. The ISP *WILL* shut the spammer down. They have a very low tolerance to SPAM. They can also see if someone is hijacking a legitimate account. 2) For the more technical, tell your email client to display the full header of the email. Here's an example from a recent SPAM: >From wlg (AT) cofs (DOT) com Fri Apr 23 04:33:38 1999 Received:from mail.cofs.com (www.cofs.com [209.4.12.28]) by Pricilla.tricountyi.net (2.6 Build 1 (Berkeley 8.8.6)/8.8.4) with SMTP id EAA01973 for <jivago (AT) tricountyi (DOT) net>; Fri, 23 Apr 1999 04:33:37 -0400 wlg (AT) cofs (DOT) com Message-ID:9904230833.EAA01973 (AT) pricilla (DOT) tricountyi.net> Received: from default [209.4.12.89] by mail.cofs.com (SMTPD32-4.06) id Most of it is gibberish to me, but I can see that it is from MAIL.COFS.COM. A quick visit to WWW.COFS.COM gave me the email address of the owner of the MAIL.COFS.COM server, who responded quite quickly to my complaint. The header can't be faked (that I know of). The same SPAMmer used a fake return address last time and I busted him by looking at the header. This time COFS.COM should shut him down. 3) Forward the email to your own ISP, ask them to find the source of the SPAM, and ask them to inform the originating ISP to stop this account from sending email to you. Any of the above just take 2 or 3 minutes and can save not just you but 100's of others much grief. If each and every devotee would react immediately to each and every SPAM, the number of SPAM emails will reduce very quickly. There are many VNN.ORGs, IRG whatever's, and PADA this and that's, where people can legitimately express their dissent. Or as the case may be, destroy their spiritual lives for many births. Let them do as the wish, but we do not have to be helpless victims.
