Without getting too involved with the present Moon/science/broad/narrow-minded katha, it seems worthwhile to clarify the above quote, as I find we sometimes quote things out of context, and this leads to misunderstandings. Srila Prabhupada is referring here to sambandha, abhideya and prayojana. The passages in the 5th Canto express ontology, and are considered part of sambandha-jnana or, as Srila Prabhupada says in the above quote, "our eternal relation with God". Thus 5th Canto topics in the Bhagavatam would not be considered outside "these three items" or superfluous, but rather part of achieving the goal of life (prayojana). Ironically, this passage in the Bhagavatam's introduction, is from Lord Caitanya's discussion with Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya where Lord Caitanya is correcting Sarvabhauma for "interpreting the self-evident Vedic version", which seems to touch upon the discussion at hand. Superfluous and concocted Vedic references, while in this context refering to interpretations of the followers of Sankara (Cc. Madhya 6.179), might also refer to such things as the karma-kanda texts. Such texts, which comprise a majority of the Vedas, do contain exaggerations to encourage the practitioner to take to those practices.
