Namas te. Hare Krishna. Tanpura (a/k/a tamboura) is just a drone instrument; it is used mainly to provide singers with the tonic note, as well as to provide a soothing sound and mood. It isn't possible to play melodies or ragas on the tanpura. For that, you may be thinking of the Sitar, another stringed instrument. Both may be used in kirtana appreciably, though they aren't absolutely necessary, nor traditional. A good source for such things would be the Ali Akbar College of Music, in California. See their website at: http://www.aacm.org/shop By the way, AACM now sells traditional Shrikhol (Bengali clay mridangas) too, and they're cheaper than from other dealers ($100). They can ship instruments safely; I've ordered from them before. I hope this helps. Mukunda Datta dasa
