Guest guest
If you use a normal switch (which immediately apply the full voltage), you can turn on a light bulb only a limited number of times. So each time you turn it on, it uses energy. Not directly but indirectly, namely the energy to produce a new light bulb. But if you use a dimmer and each time slowly turn on the light, it will not shorten the life the lamp. This method is used in light shows in discos where the lamps are turned on and off thousands of times. The same applies to fluorescent light. It depends on how fast the voltage is applied to the tube. Modern lights with electronics do it better than the old ones.
