Guest guest
Here is a statement for a news broadcast on Hare Krishna TV news: David Wolf (Dhira Govinda dasa), for his Ph.D. in Social Work at Florida State University, conducted an experiment on the value of chanting the Hare Krsna maha mantra. Through newspaper ads he recruited about 90 participants who were previously unfamiliar with the Hare Krsna maha mantra. They were divided into three groups. One group chanted the maha mantra three rounds per day, which takes about 25 minutes, for 28 days. Another group chanted three rounds per day of a mantra that Dr. Wolf concocted, and the third group didn't chant any mantra. Each group completed a packet of surveys before the first day of chanting, after the 28th day, and 4 weeks after the 28th day. In the packet was a standardized survey measuring stress, a survey measuring depression, and a survey, developed by Dr. Wolf, that assesses the Vedic psychological constructs of sattva, or goodness, rajas, or passion, and tamas, or darkness. In accord with Vedic theory, the maha mantra group decreased their stress, depression, and tamas, and increased their sattva, compared with the other two groups. The factors of gender and age were statistically controlled in this experiment. This experiment provides some evidence for the use of the Hare Krsna maha mantra as a therapeutic tool. After Dr. Wolf's oral defense, several professors and graduate students commented that they were impressed with Dr. Wolf's incorporation of spiritual practice into scholarly scientific pursuits.
