Guest guest
Here's a vegetarian warning notice issued by Hindus working in UAE, that may be of interest to some devotees. Best, however, is to be very strict and not take karmi foods at all. Are you a vegetarian and or a Hindu who would at least like to abstain from eating cows or are you a muslim who would like to avoid non-halal products? "You will not be absolved from sins committed unknowingly. So do not eat anything unless you know what it is." Do you ever read the ingredients in items you buy & do you understand them fully? How to read food labels? " How to find which items might contain products from slaughtered animals ? Here's a list of ingredients that could be animal products : (these items could be sourced from animal products and will be taken to be so unless specified otherwise) Calcium Stearate Monostearates Oleic Acid Olein Oxystearin Enzymes Stearic Acid Tween Fatty Acids Steering Spermaceti Pepsin Magnesium Stearate Mono & Diglycerides Stabilizers Rennet Palmitin Gelatin Polysorbater Lecithin Vitamin D3 Emulsifiers Glycerol Glycin Glyceryl Glyceral "E" numbers that are or could be non-vegetarian are : 120 140 141 153 161 161g 252 280 322 352 385 404 422 430-436 450 470-478 481-483 491-495 509 516 526 540 545 552 570 572 623 627 631 635 904 ICE CREAMS : Most ice creams contain E471 or egg. IGLOO/KIMO/NESTLE are some brands which are vegetarian. CAKES : Almost all cakes bought outside have eggs in them. CHOCOLATES : Most chocolates contain E322 & Lecithin. Some brands clearly specify Soya Lecithin which is okay. Ferraro/Jaques/Cochelle/Kandos/Kit Kat/Quality Street generally are vegetarian. Even chocolate is supposed to contain mildly intoxicating ingredients and it is therefore advisable to avoid/control them. Carob (available in Europe) could be an alternative to chocolate to make chocolates at home. CHEESE : Almost all cheeses have Rennet, also called Calf Rennet. This is a thin lining from the intestine of the calves and thus to be most diligently avoided. Mayonnaise cheese has eggs. There are a few brands that are available fortunately - Sliced Cheese - Co-op Islami; Cream Cheese Spread - Puck etc. Danish Mozerella can be taken too which specify that the rennet used is microbial/bacterial/vegetarian or synthetic rennet. OTHERS : Most Jelly have Gelatin and so beware. Many varieties of bread and buns & croissants have egg topping (especially if they are shiny). Could there be better breads than Idli's/doklas? Cool drinks contain some poisonous chemicals used as preservatives and anti-freeze. Best is to try natural juices, lassi, coconut water etc. Biscuits - most have eggs and some have beef fat too. Nutro is one brand that is totally vegetarian. Sweets - Varakh - the silver lining on top of sweets making them more attractive. The procedure with which Varakh is made is unbelievably horrible (using fresh cow intestines) and Varakh should be avoided totally. We have to be careful even with regard to soaps/tooth paste/shaving gel etc. Onions & Garlic: Increases the mode of passion in individuals and not fit for offering to Lord Krishna. Muslims are also forbidden from going to pray after eating onion & garlic. Mushrooms are also to be avoided. " Coffee & Tea : Contain Caffine and are stimulating and therefore to be avoided. " Pan (betel Nuts/Leaf) : Fit for offering to Lord Krishna only and a regular habit is dangerous and becomes addictive. Better avoid totally. Very strict vegetarians need to avoid even eating at hotels which claim to be "Vegetarian cum Non-Vegetarian" - as utensils/spoons/plates etc could be mixed up what to say of oils etc. Vegetarian Pizzas which are being offered also would have above mentioned mixing. So is the case on aircrafts. Also note that special meals can be requested on flights, but a Hindu meal is taken as permitting non-vegetarian. Especially avoid going to joints like KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Inn etc.
