It is a widely understood advice in the scriptures. The reference that comes to mind is the description of Lord Siva and Ganapati. Originally Ganapati was a normal boy with a human head, but Lord Siva didn't know that Ganapati was his son. Parvati had asked her son to guard the door and not to let anyone in. When Siva came home and was obstructed from entering into his own house he got angry and cut of the boys head. Parvati came out and informed him he had just destroyed his own son's head. Siva immediately decided to give his son another head replacement. He sent his assistants out to find a suitable head. The criteria Lord Siva gave was to find the first living entity who was sleeping with head to the north and to cut off his head and bring it. The rationale was anyone who was stupid enough to sleep with his head to the north deserved to have his head cut off. I also happened to read a science article of a study about sleeping in different directions and independent research produced the result that sleeping to the east or South gave normal restful sleep while sleeping to the North or West gave interupted sleep without proper dream patterns that produced sleep which wasn't fully restful. People would wake up without feeling fully refreshed. I have heard this advice about sleeping from Srila Prabhupada, but if you want me to search for a direct quote I can also look for one. I hope this finds you blissful and healthy in Krishna consciousness. Your ever well wisher, Jayapataka Swami
