I feel like sincerity plays the > most fundamental role in spiritual life. [What is the role of sincerity in our Krishna consciousness?] Sincerity is also affected by our level of understanding and knowledge. Arjuna was completely sincere about his feelings towards his relatives the Kurus and his spiritual elders in the Kurukshetra battlefield. However he was in illusion. So it isn't only sincerity. Sincerity is a kind of truthfulness to our own beliefs and understanding, but what if our understanding is incorrect? Then even though we are sincere we will make erroneous decisions. Lord Sri Krishna had to correct Arjuna and because Arjuna was sincere he could accept the instructons of Lord Sri Krishna. Then Arjuna was properly situated. So we need a combination of sincerity, spiritual wisdom and causeless mercy of the vaisnavas/Guru/Krishna.
