All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Thankyou for your question cited below with my comments. > Dear Srila Acaryapada, > Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to you and Srila > Prabhupada. > > Why is it better to "engage imperfectly in one's own occupation than > perfectly in other's"? What is referred to as "perfection" here? If one is > very good at something, should he stop doing it and do something he's not > so expert in? What, then, are the symptoms and definition of one's guna > and karma (nature)? How do we tell, since in these messed up times it's > hard to tell even such basics as what one's material nature is? Please > help. > > I hope the question is not too messed up. > > Your confused servant > Isana Caitanya dasa Say for instance you are a grihastha, so you should do your grihastha duties. If you do brahmacari duties very nicely it wouldn't be appropriate since you are a grihastha. Like that Arjuna was a ksatriya and as such he should perform his ksatriya duties as that is his nature. If he were to act as a Brahmana perfectly, but actually neglect his own duties as a ksatriya that wouldn't be perfectly doing his duties. This is primarily in relation to one's duties in varnasrama, but it can also be applied to other circumstances. I hope that this finds you in good health.
