I can't understand why it is so complicated. Either you don't know how to relate with the people you are serving with, or there is something inappropriate about the devotional service or how you are applying it. Devotional service doesn't need to be so much complicated. As far as chanting 16 rounds, reading SB and following 4-regs: yes it is considered devotional service. However to achieve prema bhakti one needs to get the special mercy of Lord Sri Krishna and normally to achieve that one needs to be always engaged in devotional service. Since chanting 16 rounds takes maximum 2 hours and reading is probably less than that--how one spends the remaining 21 hours a day is important.
