There are different levels of observing ekadasee. If one is doing a full

fast with only water or without even water then the day prior one has to

also observe various restrictions as well as the day after.

For the normal no grain ekadasee what authorities have explained to me is

that vaisnava days or tithis begin at sunrise. However, the vaisnavas begin

observing them the prior Bramha muhurta or 1.5 hours prior to sunrise.

Once one goes to rest the previous night then one should wake up and then

eat prasadam even if it is prior to Brahma Muhurta. However if one is up

late doing devotional service then one can take prasadam prior to taking

rest. Midnight has no real relevance in the Vedic calculation of Days and

time. Someone mentioned to me that the food should be digested prior to

sunrise, but for all of this I have no written pranam. Different devotees,

priests and Vaisnavas have explained it to me like this. We have seen Srila

Prabhupada practice ekadasee non different from this, although I never saw

him staying up late or eating late.

I hope that this finds you in good health.

Your ever well wisher,

Jayapataka Swami
