Nirjala Ekadasee is also known as Bhima Ekadasee and yes he observes it

without water. It is optional for other devotees to observe it as nirjala,

but it is said that if one does so it is equal to one years or more

ekadasees. Although someone way observe this ekadasee still we observe all

the other ekadasees as well.

As far as other ekadasees are concerned:

I never heard that they are to avoid Kali's influence. Ekadasee has been

observed in previous yugas as you have rightly pointed out. Grains contain

sinful reactions on Ekadasee therefore we don't eat grains on ekadasee.

I hope that this finds you in good health.

Your ever well wisher,

Jayapataka Swami
