All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Thankyou for your letter cited below with my comments. I have noted the contents carefully. > Dear Srila Jayapataka Maharaja, > > Please accept my most respectful obeisances. All glories to Your > Holiness. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. > > What is the significance of observing the caturmasya fast? > > Thanks. > > Your eternal servant, > Varsabhanavi-devi dasi Well it is mentioned in Haribhakti Vilasa that all civilized persons should observe it. During these months the Lord is taking rest and he turns over from one side to the other in the middle of the two months. So each month some basic restrictions are given. In Padma Purana much more is stated about Caturmasya including the benefits one gets from observing different kinds of fasting. I will see if we can get some print outs of that. Like not taking salt for 4 months gives one a beautiful voice. If someone wants to be a good singer then they can do that vrata. The final month Damodar is very important for increasing our devotion to Lord Sri Krishna. I hope that this finds you in good health. Your ever well wisher, Jayapataka Swami
