Also just like a "mantra" is transcendental sound meant to liberate the conditioned soul "man" and "tra". Isn't a mudra also a Yantra (you can give the exact sanskrit meaning for "yan" and "tra") which my basis understanding is a kind of "machine" or symbol which can purify and liberate the consciousness. So there are Mudras for Matsya, for Visnu Symbols (lotus, conch, cakra, padma), for so many objects. The idea that they are for counting mantras doesn't relate with these specific yantras in divine shapes which have their own potency.
