Is it alright for a devotee to > get married before taking initiation. Would becoming engaged or > married would help someone in their spiritual life, and hasten their > spiritual progress (i.e. initiation). Is this a proper understanding? It is normally recommended to be initiated first, but there is no hard and fast rule for that. One can also get married before initiation. In each case it is a personal consideration depending on individual needs and nature. In married life it is important to have a Krishna conscious partner otherwise it is difficult to progress in Krishna consciousness. A strong Krishna conscious partner could help one to keep on the track. If one is very disturbed by the senses this might help to balance one. At the same time, household life is a very big commitment and it also takes a lot of time to do ones duties as a householder husband or wife. That can take some more energy. So these things should be weighed when one is deciding what to do. In India some Vaisnavas have the initiation on the day of the marriage. I hope this helps. I hope that this finds you in good health. Your ever well wisher, Jayapataka Swami
