Onion and garlic came from the dead body of a murdered cow and therefore they are considered like eating meat. They break the non-vegetarian principle from the sastric point of view. Strict vegetarians don't eat onion nor garlic. Since meat is tamasic they are also tamasic food. They may have some medicinal value like even wine is used in medicines sometimes. As a food they are taboo for devotees. > > ys bh. didzis > I hope that this finds you in good health. I have yet to see any from the Puranas, but I know they exist. Some say that a cow was killed by a King hitting it with his chariot and from the dead body onions and garlic grew out. So eating these plants is like eating meat. Another story was posted here recently from another source. I am waiting to find authoritative stories/histories directly from puranas, but as yet haven't got any. I want with sloka numbers and sections and exact puranas. We know they are there and Srila Prabhupada confirmed that they are tamasic. I am sure some researcher will find the references soon.
