It is an annual austerity that is prescribed to be performed by all human

beings in the vedas. It corresponds with the time when Lord Visnu takes rest

for four months.

It is mandatory to follow at least the basic four practices.

First month no spinach. Second month no yoghurt. Third month no milk.

Fourth month is no urid dal (no non-veg for non-veggies).

If one wants to perform additional austerities there are a more then a dozen

options of additional austerities like no milk, no salt, just taking

unsalted unspiced kitcherie called havasanna, etc.

> -Why does one not shave the beard?

If one does the full fasting then one of the austerities possible is also to

not cut the hair or beard for 2 months at a time.
