(Lecture by Srila Gurudev, CC, on 14-01-02 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) ------- CC, Madhya Lila, Chapter 12 / 13. -------------------------------- Jaya Jaya Sri Caitanya Jaya Nityananda Jaya Advaita Candra Jaya Gaura Bhaktha Vrnda (4 times) Mukam Karoti Vaachalam .. prayer ! GUNDICA MARJANAM ---------------- So today is the day of Gundica Marjanam. The day before the Rath Yatra is when Lord Caitanya cleansed the Jaganath Puri temple. At that time, in the morning Lord Caitanya appeared before the representative of King Prataparudra and said that we like to clean the Gundica mandir. Lord Jaganath goes from Nilachal (Jaganath Puri temple) and goes to Gundica which is about 2km away, a small temple and a very big garden. So then the superintendent of the temple gave 100 brooms, and 100 clay pots, so that Lord Caitanya and His devotees could clean. So they went to this Gundica temple which for one year lies unused. So there were many leaves, and branches, and sticks and different things in it. They do what we call Maha clean up, super clean up. So every body was busy picking, sweeping and picking up the pebbles, the stones. Lord Caitanya said, let's bring out the dirt to the outside of the temple and whoever has the biggest pile of garbage (It's like a competition) is the winner. So everybody is trying to do more. While they are working, some people are doing very good, then Lord Caitanya praised them saying they are doing very good job and tell others, "see how he is doing, why don't you do like he does". So in this way sometimes Lord Caitanya also would joke with someone saying, "you are not doing up to your capacity, what's wrong , something wrong", will make the person feel shy. Some person He would say, "you can do better than this". So different ways He would get the people enthused, by praising, by showing someone as an example, by joking. So somehow everyone was trying to work up to their capacity. But Lord Caitanya was himself doing the labour of 100 people. At the end of the cleaning, Lord Caitanya's pile was so big that everyone's else was small. They put eveyone's together, still it was smaller than Lord Caitanya's. 100 Vs 1 is also 100 lost. "Gauranga Mahaprabhu ki." Devotee's chant "Jai" Then after, getting those big things, then they began again sweeping the smaller dusts, so they swept out the dust again. After sweeping the dust, then they brought water from, (about 400m there was a big lake called) Indradyumna Sarovara. So from there, they had like a bunking brigade, they dipped their clay pots, hand it to the next, and hand it to the next. So there will be so many 100s and 100s of people passing the water pots till they reach to the temple. So Lord Caitanya was throwing the water on the ceiling, on the wall. Different devotees where throwing and then using their brooms, may be they were coconut brooms, so you can use in water and they were cleaning the temple like that. Some places they put mark, to keep the water in and they will let the water out and it went like a river. So in this way they were very active in cleaning. All these great acharyas like Swarup Damodar, Mahaprabhu Himself, Ramananda Roy, who was a governor of a state of Northern Andhra Pradesh, they all are cleaning the temple of Jaganath at Gundica. This temple cleaning is called Gundica Marjana. Marjana means, "to clean". We have seen about "Marjana" in the Guruvastaka prayers for Mangala arati. "The Samsara dhava nala . . . ." prayers. One of the verses say Mandira Marjanadhau. Daily Cleaning of the temple is part of "Sri Vigraha Aradana" ----------------------------- Sri Vigrahara dhana nitya nana, Sringara tanman dira marjanadau. So that "Sri Vigraha Aradana" - in the worship of the deity, part of the worship of the deity is to daily worship and also to daily clean the temple. Using our bodies we used to clean the temple. So this service was personally shown by Lord Caitanya. How many of you have ever cleansed the temple? (Pointing to someone) "You didn't clean the temple yet, so you are missing out". Cleansing the temple is cleansing our hearts. In this way Lord Caitanya, He cleansed and while He was cleaning it is said, Purifying Our Consciousness --------------------------- (Reading from Caitanya Caritamrita Madhya 12.85) premolläse çodhena, layena kåñëa-näma bhakta-gaëa 'kåñëa' kahe, kare nija-käma In premolläse, in great jubilation, in love for Krsna they are cleaning, they are happy cleaning , because it is for Krsna. "layena kåñëa-näma". They all are chanting "Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare". All the devotees are chanting Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, and doing their work. So Lord Caitanya, He was looking beautiful covered with dirt and dust. When you clean, you also get dirty. But they are all happy doing this wonderful service, throwing the water, cleansing. (pause) So in this way, So Lord Caitanya also put sandalwood pulp on devotee's body and gave them garlands. So Srila Bhakthi Siddantha Saraswathi Thakur said, this leela, this pastime is to inform us that, how we have to also purify our consciousness. So there are four different stages, and the fourth stage, after cleaning with the water and afterwards and they cleaned the cracks in between the stone granite with sticks to get out all of the dirt in the cracks. So this is like this, in the beginning we have so many big dirt like stones, pebbles, attachment to breaking the regulative principles, may be someone is attached to eating meat, fish, eggs, onions, garlic or somebody is also attached to gambling or somebody is attached to like, some kind of sinful activities. So giving up those desires out from the heart is like the first step. Then we have to get our heart purified from doing things for other reasons. "Anya abilasita sunyam, jnana karmadi anavrtam. There shouldn't be "anya abilash". No other desires but to please Krsna. No external motives. Some people have external motives of fruitive activities, speculative knowledge, and severe austerities. Too much austerity also is not good and so on. Doing these kind of activities is not good for developing our love for Krsna. (Long pause) Like on "BHOGI" - throw out the Dirt --- Krsna is in our heart, but we won't see Krsna in our heart unless we can purify the heart. So like this, we get these other desires out from the heart, that's the first thing. But then there is also dust, this dust has to be also taken out. Some of the modernized material benefits also disturb us. Somebody is thinking that by doing some good karma they can counteract the bad karma. So they are still into this idea of doing punya karma, worshiping devas, so these things are also like the dust because they are obstacles to our pure bhakthi. Impersonal speculation thinking that we are God, is another very big obstacle. Anything we have that can inspire enviousness in us should be cleansed and thrown outside. Not only was the dirt thrown outside like on the bhogi day, we throw the dirty things out right! Today is the "Pongal" and this is the New Year, so yesterday was the cleaning that tradition is there, also here, right. Take out the dirty things from the house. Like that we have to take out the dirty things from our heart. So those dirty things also desire for bhoga. Its interesting! the same word, who is desiring bhoga is called "bhogi", he wants to enjoy bhoga. So he is known as a "bhogi". And the last day of the year is called "bhogi". So we want to burn old things, like that we want to burn these materialistic desires from our heart, clean it out and cultivate the desire to serve Krsna. That desire is very natural but it gets covered by all this dirt, so we have to clean out the dirt. Cleaning Finer Dust ------------------- Like somebody, they may get gross dirt; let me do business for Krsna. I want to do some business for Krsna and make money and do something for Krsna. But may be later, because of some material conditioning, they may not give the result of their business to Krsna or they may think that I am giving the money so I am the giver, I am the doer and then we start to get into some politics with some other devotee, that's called "Kutti natti", so different ways our consciousness becomes contaminated. But this is more difficult to see because the proposed purpose is to please Krsna. But in the name of pleasing Krsna we are doing something which is not right. It's hard to tell. Sometimes amongst devotees there is disagreement. Someone is claiming I am doing for Krsna. But what they are doing is not the right thing. So how to discriminate all these things. So its like a fine dust, more hard to clean. Gross things, you can say, you are eating meat and that's bad, ok this is no …I just want to do something for Krsna, but actually there is some problem there. That's why we always need the guidance of the guru to avoid this type of weeds. Sometimes one is wanting to do something which is forbidden or they have some desire to make some profit, I am serving Krsna but what do I get out of it materially. So this desire for gain makes it more like a business deal than an actual bhakti. Bhakti is an offering of love. Just like to say, here there are some parents, if one of your children want to do some service just because they want to help their mother or father. This might touch your heart very much, Oh I have such a nice child. But then if the child says ok, I would like to. If you say, "can you help clean the dishes", then the modern teenagers say "I can clean the dishes but then I want to be able to go out and watch this movie or and I want to do this", you know, they make like a deal. Although my duty is, but you have to give me some sense gratification in return, then I'll do. So its not like where, parents might do to just to get the job done, but this is not very good. You cannot say that it is a pure sense of duty. It's not the same thing. Even in our own dealings we can see different kinds of dealings. So when it comes to our relationship with Krsna then we see all these things very carefully. Somebody wants to do their service so that they get respected by other people, they want to become popular. Some people even go to some solitary place that everybody will say that he is a very great sadhu. So although they look very renounced, but they are actually looking to get more fame as a great sadhu. So they are not the selfless people even though they may be appearing so renounced. So this is very hard to pick up for ordinary people. But expert devotee has to learn how to clean all these things out from the heart. Somebody might be a professional Bhagavatam lecturer, or mystic yogi or miracle man or God man or something and get all kinds of public acclaim in the name of religion. But this is not pure bhakthi. If his motive is to gain name and fame and be a popular person and then this is also dust and dirt in our heart. So just like Lord Caitanya cleansed the heart many times, we have to also clean again and again, going deeper and deeper. What is the idea, we want to invite Krsna to come inside our heart and be seated there. Just like Lord Caitanya was cleaning the temple to invite Jaganath, Baladev and Subadra to stay there. So we clean the heart by chanting "Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare". The Other Lesson ---------------- And the other thing we can learn from this pastime of Lord Caitanya is, He was teaching by his own example, just like His Holiness Bhakti Vrajendranandan Swami Maharaj, he chants his japa in front of everybody to teach by example, how we should chant japa. He is teaching us by his example. Sometimes HH Bhakti Vikas Maharaj is going out and distributing books. He is also teaching by example, so different devotees who are doing services; we have to teach by example. So this is one of the principles. So if you want to teach others, we have to also come up to the standard to be able to teach. So this festival is very good, because Lord Caitanya is teaching us to clean our hearts and how to bring Krsna into our hearts. Then Lord Caitanya after cleaning the Gundica Temple, next to Gundica Temple, there is a temple of Narasingadev. "how many of you have visited the Narasinga temple in Jaganath Puri, You have not gone?" (pointing to someone) I took so many devotees from South India one time to Gundica , Narasingadev. You were not in that tour? That was few years ago. May be before? SRI GOPALA - Pastime -------------------- This is a very ancient temple, so they were also cleaning that temple. After cleaning the temple they began dancing and having a kirtan in the temple. And everyone was chanting and Lord Caitanya was dancing in the middle. There was perspiration, jubilation, tears, trembling, fainting, shedding tears. And tears were coming from His eyes, like coming from syringe. "peeshhhhh" and He is bathing everybody. (Asking the crowd) "How many of you like to get a bath from Lord Caitanya's tears" (everyone lift their hands) "GAURANGAAAAAA". (Devotee (small boy says ) "Gaurangaaaa" (everyone laughs). The whole earth was shaking for the kirtan. So then Svarup Damodar was singing, Lord Caitanya was dancing and jumping. Lord Caitanya ordered or enthused, ordered Gopala, Sri Gopala, the Son of Advaita to dance. When he was dancing in ecstatic love he fell on to the ground unconscious. He danced so much he fainted and fell unconscious. His father put him in the lap and was trying to revive him, but then he saw he wasn't breathing, so he became very agitated, very disturbed. Advaita acharya and all the others began to chant the name of Narasingadev and sprinkle water . So the chanting was so great, so loud, it was like shaking the whole universe. Still the boy didn't regain consciousness and Advaita and others were crying. Such a nice devotee is died. Then Lord Caitanya went and put His hand on the heart of Gopala, Sri Gopala and said,"Gopala Stand Up". As soon as Gopala heard the voice of Lord Caitanya, he immediately came to his senses, and then all the devotees began to dance chanting the holy name. Haribol, Haribol, Haribol. This history is told in greater detail in Caitanya Bhagavat by Sri Vrndavan Das Thakur. Caring for His Devotees and the Lord`s Loving Exchanges ---------------------- After that they all went to take their bath. They went to the Indradyumna Sarovara. So like this they observed the festival, cleansing the temples, many wonderful things happened. Then Kasi Misra and Tulasi, superintendent of the temple brought vast prasadam as much as 500 men could eat. Large quantities of prasadam which consisted of rice, cakes, sweet rice, and varieties of vegetables. Lord Caitanya was very satisfied seeing the nice arrangement. Being the order from Lord Caitanya, everybody sat down one line after another. (Pointing the devotees) "have you ever sat down in a line taking prasadam.? Few times? So Lord Caitanya did the same thing. So like this, everyone was taking their prasad together in that garden and Krsna`s pastime of taking His lunch with the cowherd boys in the forest of Vrndavan was being remembered by Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya said , "you give me the very simple prasad, I want the läphrä-vyaïjana. Just give me that mixed vegetable, give the other devotees, the nice preparation like cakes, sweet rice, amrta gutika. So this läphrä may be like a kichari kind of simple preparation. So the Lord gives the rich things to the devotee and just takes the simple. Lord Caitanya knew what each devotee likes. He was saying to Swarup Damodar, you bring this devotee, which he knows, He is the super soul in the heart, this one wants bitter melon, this one wants Dosa, this one wants sambar, this one here wants coconut chutney. Whatever they want, He is telling to bring, they are amazed "how He knows what I want". You don't have to ask, He tells, Give that one, Sweet rice, Payasam, give this one Sakara Payasam, Sakara Pongal. What is the other pongal? (Asking Devotees) Ven pongal. So all are given their different preparations. Although Lord Caitanya said to give all the first class things, Jagadananda was distributing prasad. Jagadananda, he always wants to see that Lord Caitanya should be served nicely. Lord Caitanya is always trying to be very simple. So he kind of walked by all the kind of nice prasad and suddenly he put it on Lord Caitanya's plate and all the devotees were feeling very happy. So when all the nice prasad came on to Lord Caitanya's plate, He became already very angry. (Long Pause) Lord Caitanya was afraid of Jagadananda because he was so, he has got so much love for Lord Caitanya, and he wants to see "you should eat properly". So being afraid to disatisfy Jagadananda He ate something. He knew that If he didn't eat the food given by Jagadananda, Jagadananda would fast. Being afraid of His devotee fasting then Lord Caitanya ate some of the offering he gave. Then Swarup Damodar - he came with special mahaprasadam of Jaganath, some very nice sweet meat. He said so Lord this was offered to Jaganath, please see how Jaganath has tasted this offering, and then put one on the plate. So out of the affection then Lord Caitanya accepted. When Svarup Damodar gave another one, another one, so between Jagadananda and Svarup Damodar, Lord Caitanya was getting enough prasadam. This is very uncommon. There was so much loving exchange between them. So Lord Caitanya, next to Him was Sarva Bhauma Bhattacharya sitting, He told them give him that, give him that Prasad, give him more. So much nice prasadam was coming for Sarva Bhauma Bhattacharya. So even amongst prasadam serving, there were so much exchange of rasa, and love between the devotees. So this is also one of the pastimes of Lord Caitanya, serving prasadam. We are more happy to see the other devotees eat and we eat after. It is more enjoyable to serve prasad, at one level of devotional - may be in the beginning not, but at one level you will feel more happy serving people prasad than eating the prasad. But still you have to eat prasad. You cannot escape. Someone else has to serve you. This is the exchange between the devotees. In six ways they exchange love. By giving and receiving prasadam, by revealing their mind and hearing the other person's mind, and also by service and receiving service. So Lord Caitanya loves to praise the devotees, increase the glories of the devotees and to give the devotees satisfaction. So, If you think how I can please Lord Caitanya, how I can please the Lord, that's "Devotee". Then the lord is thinking how I can please this devotee. Usually every body is thinking how can I please myself. And they are not satisfied. When we think how we can please Krsna, everyone else becomes satisfied. And Krsna, this devotee is going to please me, so he thinks how He can please this devotee. Now who's is more expert - You or Krsna? You are trying to please Krsna, you are trying to please Lord Caitanya and everyone. Ok, you are going to compete with me, Ok; I am going to please you. Then He is going to win. You become worser, then you feel why Krsna is serving me so much, I have to serve him more. So we keep on going and trying to serve them more, trying to satisfy Krsna. So this way there is a natural loving exchange, the devotees are satisfied. That satisfaction is pure. Any questions? -------------- Srila Gurudev : Bhoomi Radha ? Bhoomi Radha : Austerities … Srila Gurudev : Couldn't hear very well Bhoomi Radha : You mentioned too much of austerities not good Srila Gurudev : Yes Bhoomi Radha : Sometimes taking austerities is increase in vairagya and inturn lead to devotion & bhakthi. Srila Gurudev : Too much of austerities is increasing vairagya and... Bhoomi Radha : Yes and taking austerity for devotion is good, what kind of austerity can be taken, or whether it is only good during the vrata time, the austerity. Srila Gurudev : Only during the … Bhoomi Radha : Vrata time, Damodar month or some special vrata time. Srila Gurudev : Too much austerities, that, they make the heart hard, they become very tolerant to do austerities. So, that makes the heart hard, tough. Whereas for devotional service, it is better to have a soft heart, so we can have love of Krsna. So, too much austerities are which, fasting for one day or something, that's not a big thing, but some people they do, extended fasts, 40days fast, one week fast and all kinds of very heavy fast. They may do such fast but it is not in itself beneficial for bhakthi. Say you are traveling and there is no vegetarian food, so you fast. That's because there is no food and you can eat and that's a kind of thing happens in bhakthi. Sometimes you eat some fruit, you eat some curd rice or something because all the sambar has got onions in it. So some devotees also accept some austerity, sometimes for their devotional service but, some are just into doing some extreme tapasya, which does not have any devotional link to it, its simply to show how renounced they are, and to prove to themselves and to the world that they can do it and this thing can be an obstacle in one's devotional service. There was once a Sannyasi, who wanted to circumambulate the Ganges. He wanted to do Ganga parikrama, walk on one side of the Ganga up to Gomukh and come around the other side and go down to "Sagar" swim over and walk back up the other side and complete the entire parikrama of the Ganga, may be, it must be over 4000 miles, 4000 km, roughly, I don't know the exact length of the Ganga but, there might be about 2000 km, I am speculating. Anyone knows the length of the Ganga? Some geography students here, that know, you're a student? You don't know? It's a long way 3, 4, 5 '000miles or so, especially because it's turning. Then when he came back, he told Srila Bhakthi Siddanta Saraswathi Thakur, who told, don't do it, because, it's nothing to do with bhakthi, he said you should preach. Lord Caitanya asked us to preach Bhagavat-Gita, why you should go and do all this parikrama. It's like trying to do some kind of punya karma. So he disobeyed the guru and did it any way. Came back, "I did it". When he came back, Srila Bhakthi Siddantha Saraswathi Thakur took away his danda, and said, "you are no longer a sannyasi, you are back to bramachari. You have to clean the pots. You go wash the pots". This is against bhakthi. Just doing something because we want to do it, show I can do it. If it is not serving Krsna's interest, even it may be otherwise a pious activity you shouldn't do. Now sometimes, some ladies go on diets in the west especially. They think they are too fat, so they go on dieting, dieting and then they get a problem that they actually start to become very very skinny. I think they call it "anorexia". They cannot eat any more. Their health goes down, and so it becomes like another disease. Even they are skinny, they think I am still too fat. It becomes like a fat phobia. So these are the kind of different extremes the mind go and so try to avoid the extremes. We do Ekadasis, we do Janmastami, and we do so many fasting. We don't do any kind of extreme fasting. Rather our fasting is we take Krsna Prasad. We fast from other food. In emergency we take vegetarian food. That's our fasting. (Two questions left, because I am suppose to meet a few devotees) (Reading a written question) "Respected Guru Maharaj Please accept my respectful obeisances. Sometimes the cleansing process becomes sooooooo .. tiring (laughter) that we find ourselves in hopeless condition. What is to be done to feel encouraged? Thankyou very much Guru Maharaj. Srila Gurudev" - Mr & Ms Anonymous. (laughter) Once Prabhupad was giving a lecture in Mayapur and he said a similar thing. He said our soul is pure but we have to cleanse the soul. Cleanse the dirt covering the soul, But sometimes I feel like I am cleaning a piece of coal, because no matter how much I am washing only black is coming. (laughter) Not only the devotees feel and sometimes even the guru is feeling. Newer and newer maya's are coming out, but we shouldn't get discouraged, because Lord Caitanya has promised to deliver the most fallen. So we keep on trying to cleanse even if so many dirt is coming. We can just pray to Lord Caitanya , "Just see I am so fallen, always newer and newer dirt is coming, so I am just depending on your mercy", because He is Patitapavan. Devotee: Hare Krsna, Although I agree that bhakthi, without any other reason, is ideal, I feel, initially bhakthi starts off, praying for certain material things. Once devotion starts in this mode, automatically moves towards devotion to Krsna to reach the almighty, Godhead or Krsna. Can this mode be taken to inspire self or other Krsna conciousness. Srila Gurudev: Bhakthi mixed with desires is called, Karma misrita bhakthi. Bhakthi mixed with speculation about the impersonal truth is called Jnana misrita bhakthi. So like this bhakthi, when it is mixed, it doesn't have the same taste. Just like today is day for Sakara Pongal (sweet rice), right? If we mix one in your cup of pongal, if we put two, three teaspoon of sand from the Chennai beach (Devotees - laughter) and mix it. How will you like your Pongal? Sand, pure sand you put, fine sand, in it. You will spit it out. Will it satisfy you? You will not be satisfied. Will you suck out the sweet (sakarai) and spit out the sand? Not possible. So like that, the problem with the mixed bhakthi. May be in the beginning there will be people to worship God but it doesn't satisfy people. It's not satisfying. So we find that for someone to go from that stage to the stage of pure bhakthi, they need association with pure devotee. When they see how pure devotee is satisfied by rendering pure devotion, then they get inspired also to try for pure bhakthi. So in the beginning, they may be, good, that people come and pray for material things, but they shouldn't stay on that level, definitely. Because they won't be happy. Their focus is on the material thing. So we want to get them from that level to pure bhakthi. At least there is some bhakthi there, but it's mixed with sand. They have to clean out the sand from that. Then they will feel happy. There is some bhakthi but mixed bhakthi and it is not pure. So somebody knows that he can get pure Sakara Pongal, why they themselves put in the sand. If you know better, you know that pure bhakthi is ideal, then don't put the dirt in your Pongal. Eat the pure thing and be happy. If someone does not know any better, ok they may think that this is what Pongal is, this is with the sand, and always eating it like that with sand, so they don't know any better. Once they taste it without the sand, then they say oh! this is very nice. That's what we want to give people the taste of doing some pure bhakthi, then they can see, how much nicer it is than the mixed bhakthi. Hare Krishna Thank you very much (I said two questions, no more, then no body will come for mangala arati, and no program tommorow. )
