I always thought of BTG as a magazine for the public, though perhaps I am wrong. I haven't read the article, so I can't really be sure how they said this, but you can imagine what the public would interpret from an article saying devotees are the best everyone else is bad. For them, the understanding of grades of devotees, pure devotees, etc., may not be that clear. When they see you saying devotees are the best, they understand that you are talking about yourself, not about four or five pure devotees who were acharyas. For a magazine meant for public distribution (which includes in recent times the life members), such statements may not be the best way to preach.
