It is not intended to be stated on the cover of Back to Godhead magazine, but I was simply objecting to the word "essential" in the original text of Krishna Kirti Prabhu. Of course mundane moral behavior is important and helpful, but it is definitely not *essential*. The references are abounding: Ajamila, Jagai and Madhai, sarva-dharman parityajah, etc. Here is the full section of Krishna Kirti's text that I was commenting on and my full comment: > > A devotee who is still conditioned by the material energy cannot have > > any determination to make progress if he is acting sinfully, therefore > > so-called mundane moral behavior is also essential for his progress. > > "Essential" is not the correct word here. "Helpful" would be more > appropriate. Srila Prabhupada very clearly stated that it was not > necessary to act morally in order to make progress. Chanting Hare Krishna > is the only essential factor. He is making a valuable point, I just wanted to comment on his particular choice of that one word. Your servant, Bhaktarupa Das
