This is there even in material world/principles. Like in a company, some one may have joined ahead of me, (in the same rank) I consider him as a senior employee in the company, based on the date of joining the company. If someone joins the company after me, but shows more proficiency in the job, than me, and gets a quicker promotion and goes ahead of me, then he becomes my senior employee, not by date of joining but, senior by rank.
