Guest guest
Om Padmanaabhaay Namah Hello, Of all the Padas, or Arudhas, the Pada of the Lagna is the most important, and the Upa Pada is the second most important. As you may expect, there is some controversy in regards to the definition of Upa Pada. So that you don't get confused, let's just go over the various definitions. Upa Pada is also called Uparudha, and also Gauna Pada. We'll call it Upa Pada. (To find Upa Pada, you need to know the rules for finding the Pada, or Arudha, of a house.) The stongest view is that the Upa Pada is the Pada of the twelfth house. The second strongest view is that the Upa Pada is the Pada of the second house. Another view is that when the Lagna is an odd sign, then the Pada of the twelfth is Upa Pada and when Lagna is an even sign, the second is Upa Pada. Two very very MINORITY views are the Pada of the seventh or the fifth is the Upa Pada. Most astrologers, both 'big' and 'small', consider the Pada of the twelfth to be Upa Pada IN ALL CASES. I agree with that view and that is the definition I shall use. Let's take an example for clarity. Let's say we have Leo Lagna. Moon is in Lagna. This means that Upa Pada falls in Virgo, the second house. Also remember there are special rules for calculating Pada if it falls in the same, the seventh or the fourth. Bear these in mind (again, all in Part 3). USING THE UPA PADA OK. The Upa Pada has a variety of uses, the main ones being to see indications regarding Spouse, kids, and also renounciation becomes implicated. Also note that, unusually, the uses of the Pada of the seventh, Kama Pada (Dara Pada, Kalatra Pada etc.) are different from the Upa Pada. The Kama Pada may be used to see a person's capacity for sex (note Bill Clinton has Rahu (insatiable desires) exalted in the Kama Pada), and also other seventh house indications like business partners etc. However, the Upa Pada is specifically for Marriage and Spouse (and children). Now, basically we analyse the Upa Pada like any other house. A few basic guidelines though... Remember, concentrate more on Rasi Drishti, rather than Graha Drishti. A little mixing may be helpful though. If you find the mixing confusing, stick to sign aspect for now. Also note, that when analysing stuff for Upa Pada, the Sun IS NOT A MALEFIC. So says Maharishi Jaimini. Parashara agrees, but says you would have to consider the Sun's state - exaltation, debilitation, combustion, associations etc. Basically, good aspects and associations in the Upa Pada, give hapiness from the spouse and kids. 'Bad' combinations in the Upa Pada makes the native a ascetic or in anycase, he goes without a spouse. (I say he for simplicity. Apologies to anyone offended). A few verses from BPHS... "If the second house from the Upa Pada has the aspects of benefics or is a benefic sign or has the situation of a benefic, the effects are to be understood as happiness from the native's wife and son. And if in the second house from the Upa Pada there is a debilitated planet, or a planet in a debilitated Navamsha or a malefic planet, then the native will be destroyer of his wife. And if there is a planet in an exalted Navamsha, or situated in the exaltation sign or if it is aspected by an exalted benefic, the native will get many charming and virtuous wives, or if there is the sign of Gemini in the Upa Pada or in the second house from Upa Pada, O Brahmana (Maitreya Muni - Parashara's disciple) then also the native will be blessed with many wives. If in the Upa Pada or in the second house from the Upa Pada there is its Lord or if it's Lord is somewhere in his own sign, then O Bhusur, the native whose horoscope has this combination will have his wife's death in an advanced age, there can be no doubt about it." Digest that! Jaimini says pretty much the same thing. When looking at possibilities of a person becoming a Sanyaasi, or renouncing the world, malefic combinations must be present in the Upa Pada or the second from the Upa Pada. Jaimini says that if the are beneficial combinations in the second from Upa Pada, the person cannot take Sanyaasa, nor will he lose his spouse. Malefic combinations help Sanyaasa, especially Sanyaasi Planets like Saturn. (BTW, I have Shani Dev in Upa Pada receiving no Graha Drishti, but Rashi Drishti from Rahu, Ketu and Venus. I'll have to see how that turns out. Hmmmmm.......) Both classics (BPHS and JS) say that if the the Lord of the Upa Pada is exalted (i.e. strong), the Native's spouse will come from a high social class, whereas if the Lord is debilitated (i.e. weak) the spouse is said to be of a low social class. Benefics in the Upa Pada are said to make the spouse beautiful, although if a person loves their spouse, they will think of them as beautiful in any case. Some say that Upa Pada shows inner beauty, not outside beauty. This reminds me of a story Srila Prabhupada gives in the Science of Self Realisation. Anyway, not to lose track. A Rahu Saturn conjunction in the second from Upa Pada is said to cause loss of wife due to scandal or death. Saturn Rahu in Upa Pada in Aquarius or Capricorn are said to give lameness or flatulence :-) to the spouse. Rahu, Saturn and Sun conjunct in Upa Pada is said to give "bone fever" and other Dangerous, possibly fatal fevers to the spouse. Mercury Ketu conjunction is said to cause Decay/Breakage of bones for the spouse. Venus Ketu conjunct in Upa Pada are said to cause blood complications and Leucorrhea to the spouse. A Saturn Mars conjunction in the second from Upa Pada in Gemini or Virgo is said to cause problems with the nose for the spouse. Jupiter Rahu conjunctions in the second from Upa Pada are said to give tooth problems to the spouse. Jupiter Saturn conjunctions in the second from Upa Pada are said to cause ear problems or problems with the nervous system. If benefics aspects the above listed conjunctions, it said the bad results may be avoided. To finish off, a few more quotes from BPHS... "O Vipra, if from the above mentioned House (from the Pada Lagna and Upa Pada) in the ninth house there are Saturn, the Moon and Mercury, the native will get no son at all and in case the Sun Rahu and Jupiter be there he will have many sons. If the Moon be there he will get one son and if there is a mixture of planets the obtainment of a son will be delayed. But the Sun who is born due to the conjunction of Jupiter, the Sun and Rahu will be strong, valorous, a great conqueror and, O Vipra, the destroyer of his enemies. And if in the ninth house from the Pada Lagna or the Upa Pada there are Mars and Saturn the native will get no son or he will have an adopted son. If there is an odd sign, the combination will yield many sons and in case there be an even sign it will yield a few sons." "O Brahmana, if there is the sign Leo in the Upa Pada and if it is aspected by the Moon or if the Moon be there, the native will get a few children and if the sign Virgo is there he will have many daughters." "O Brahmana, if Rahu is in the second from the Lord of the seventh counted from Upa Pada, the native will have long and projected teeth. If Ketu is so placed he will be dumb. If Saturn, he will be Ugly, and if there be the combination of mixed planets, then mixed effects should be told." That's about it for now. Sri Sri Radha Gokulananda Ki Jai!!!
