Guest guest
Haribol prabhus, PAMHO AGTSP We got pot bellied pigs for the same reason, to eat left over prasad as it generally attracts a rat infestation otherwise. However there was a difference between the two males, which myself and husband took, and the two females which Wicklow community took. The pigs in Wicklow were eating the leftover prasad from Govindas (maybe someone from there will shed more light on this) but when I saw them they were extremely fat and well on the way to being like the Manor's which I have seen. We feed ours mainly on a mix of grain and some left over prasadam, as the temple didn't really want to have pigs around. So we kept one male and re-homed the other to avoid fighting. The one we have roots through the cow manure heap, eats grains, some old vegetable matter and some prasad. He's not at all like the Manor pigs, and maybe it has a lot to do with quantity. I remember them getting the left-over food for life when I visited, and it was an enormous amount on the day. We don't feed in huge quantitiies, and only feed once a day. He has become very regulated, extremely muscular and not heavy in the under-carraige. Also when I was at the Manor, the pigs were confined to a hut which barely fitted them both, they had to nip each other to get past the door-way. Their run was very small, so they are not really working off the food. We have ours running around in a considerable size yard, and when they were penned, we moved the pen daily. Maybe they should move and root a bit more. They generally like mineral licks, and ours usually takes the broken ones that fall from the cow sheds. He also likes a molasses lick and takes the left-over tubs from the cows. Final point, about the orange skins, thats the one thing he won't eat. He wont touch citris peels at all. Maybe ours is just fussy but I'm wondering if anyone else has found this. ys
Guest guest
Haribol Pot bellied pig persons Pigs have preferences, some prefer pershadim, some prefer pears, prunes and pineapples. I was suggesting greater intakes of vitamin "C" sense we in this area have lots of citrus our pigs eat citrus. You are correct that pigs need excersize. The poor little pot bellied pigs have been bred with standard pigs and they seem to have back problems and get very swaybacked. True potbellied pigs should not get over 40 to sixty pounds or 18 to 25K. They are very funny almost as funny as chickens. They are also very friendly and are great at digging up your garden in the spring, just before spring planting. To make a lazy pig excersize put his salt/mineral block on one end of his pasture and the water on the other and put a sun shade in the middle so he always has shade but place his food as far away as possible from the water. The portly porker will have to puff and huff from food to water and then to shade.
