Guest guest
Dandavad. Prabhupada kijaya! Everything depends on yield and how much you eat. I am just now planting my first crop of rice. We are using non-hybrid, indigenous variety called "deshi boro". It does well without chemicals or pesticides, I'm told. We are expecting a yield of about 6-8 maund (40kg) ber bigha (1/3 acre) and are planting about 2.8 bigha . That works out to be 720 - 960 kgs per acre. The HYV (high yeilding varieties) here average around 1400 kg per acre. But High yeild is a misnomer. It is actually high response, meaning highly responsive to chemical fertilizers and lots of water. Without these higher inputs the yields are not great. The householders here are all finishing up their gardens. WE just finished planting our 4,000 sft of vegetables including our first potato crop. we started a huge compost pile from all the stuff left behind by the flood (mainly water hyacinth). HOwever, here we are really playing the gentleman farmer as we hire local villagers to do all the work at $1 a day. I'm excited about the rice, though. We'll finally have organic rice.
