Guest guest
I can answer your queries in more detail later but: >But there is one problem. ("Pathogens are not a problem.") The problem is >that the "pure" sewage (biosolids) gets mixed with water run off etc. and >heavy metals and dioxins get mixed in. This means that if the compost is >used on pasture, and the cows eat some of it, (which they do) it can lead >to poisonous dioxins getting in the milk. This is why we (devotees) should not take milk from outside sources especially inorganic sources as this type of agriculture allows this to go on. They say in the UK these "heavy metals" are at acceptible levels, but those levels are not acceptible in Organic agriculture. However, having said that I have just heard from one of the directors of the countries largest waste management firms that all sewage that is processed for farming in the UK is singled out from sewage systems that do not come from major city interiors like that of Birmingham for example. Then the carefully monitored effluent is made suitable (part processed and stabilized) for distribution to farmers for injecting into the top soil or better still for composting.
