I have learned about this about a year ago. We have seen the video, probably the same that Samba Prabhu has mentioned. I started propagating this to my parents who own a small land. My mother has tried EM and is very pleased. Although she didn't understood at the beginning the specifics and made some mistakes, I will tell about them a few lines below. EM can be VERY effectively used for processing sewage waters. It eradicates the smell completely, kills patogen microorganisms. One doesn't have to wait too long before he can use it as compost - now it takes just a few weeks. When watching the video I was very impressed to see how sewage water was running through a small city; no one would believe it had such an unclear origin. At this time I thought this might be the way to deal with the problem on our vedic farms. Meanwhile my mother adds a little bit of EM solution into the basket with the well known stuff (sorry, my small dictionary which I have right now at hand doensn't have this word and there is no smell whatsoever. Because this stuff is like nectar for these Effective Microorganisms , they eat all organics very quickly. One mistake my mother made was when she wanted to douche tomatoes' leaves in order to strengthen the plants and protect them from disease. She decided the more EM solution she uses the better, so she put 10 doses instead of one in the basket. On the next day she discovered the leaves were gone - EM had eaten them. Now she is using strong solutions to fight weeds. She douches them with quite concentrated EM solution - 1:1000 if I am not mistaken. The little micro-guys consume the weeds in a few days turning them in first class organic stuff. She will also water the land in November and in early Summer. In this way one kills the weeds and their roots and prepares the soil. Of course it's not applicable where perennial plants grow as EM will eat them too. Also usually it takes some time for cow dung to be ready for utilisation. With EM the proces takes only 2 weeks. Of course it takes some years for EM to help significantly improve the soil. I myself am don't have a land. But when watching the wonders (EM was also tested in one North Russian laboratory in Buryatia, and the results are very impressive) I felt an urge to get a land and try this. There are many wonderful things that can be said of EM. But I wanted to share only things which I have seen myself. Ys Ganga dd PS One friend of mine is using EM for curdling milk! In Russia EM comes in 30 ml bottles. One bottle per 15 litres of milk. The results are wonderful - the yogurt is tasty and improves one's body PH. Again because of my bad English I cannot find the exact words.
