Guest guest
I would like to understand the relationship we have with our ancestors and what specific sadhana we should do to enhance it. Why is it important to enhance it? Every act we do is a reflection of where we are and our state of understanding. So how we treat our ancestors is a reflection of how we treat ourselves. For example take the story of Prahalada, he was a self-conceited asura's child, now how does he understand his relationship with his father - one thing we see in him is a love for God, but there is another state of mind which may be related to his love of God but let us take it by itself - the state of mind he had was that he was not guilty about abandoning his father and what he stood for and this is the crux of any sadhana done for our ancestors. To do sadhana in the memory of our ancestors depends on our state of mind. If doing sadhana in their memory is hurting us or bringing in us feelings of guilt then it is tamasic sadhana and we should avoid it and focus on our love for God and when our love for God overflows then our understanding deepens and then our love overflows not in guilt or fear but as a joyful sharing. Then memories good or bad are seen as God's plan or play we are in awe or we have a good laugh. These memories are our ancestors and in reality they are just thoughts and the only way to deal with thoughts good or bad is to surrender them at God's feet if we are a devotee or understand them with a help of knowledge given to us by the Seers past and present. One important think to remember the body and mind we have now is ours so take control of it and change it with the help of God or Guru. Off course they are the product of our ancestors but it makes no difference as it is ours and ours alone now - it is us. We can thank or curse our ancestors but the buck stops with us and if cursing them makes you grow into a better person then that is your sadhana for now, since it is better to be rajasic than tamasic and sattva or understanding will flow soon - as it is always does. So the best place to start is by loving ourselves with the help of God and Guru - the Guru might just be as simple as our desire to change so that we can love ourselves more - the more follows more and we end up becoming love ourselves. This love will then flow like the Ganga and will free and fill our ancestors. This is the sadhana which will make our 'Maker' proud, what more can our ancestors ask for.. Jai Sri Ramakrishna!
