Namaste,All,

I take some interest in Native American.Canadian Spirituality as it is

the first method I studied that led me on to the Vedanta. One of my

daughter's,(I have several), partners was active in local Indian

Sto:Lo tribes here in B.C. and sometimes gave me descriptions of

sensitive ceremonies etc etc.

The Sun Dance was actually called the 'Sun-Gazing Ceremony'. It was

banned in the USA, and was a central cause of the massacre at Wounded

Knee, and the Pine Ridge Reservation problems. However it has been

preserved intact until this day, whether it is still illegal is moot.

Sun-Gazing was a form of meditation through sitting and dance, but it

was done at such a time and in such away so the eyes weren't damaged.

"I should explain to you here that in setting up the Sun Dance

lodge, we are really making the universe in a likeness; for, you see,

each of the posts around the lodge represents some particular object

of creation, so that the whole circle is the entire creation, and the

one tree at the center, upon which the twenty-eight poles rest, is

Wakan Tanka , who is the center of everything. Everything comes from

Him, and sooner or later everything returns to

Him."

-Black Elk

The Sun as a source of energy/prana and life giving warmth has always

been used as an image of the eternal Brahman. From ancient times to

Egypt, Hindu, and even the Essenes and to this day to the

Christians/Catholics. Whose symbolism in the sun chalices is much in

evidence today...ONS..Tony

Tony...this is wonderful. I really mean it. And there are so many

more ceremonies and fields of Glory that our brothers would share if

they could........our fathers in power keep the people of their

nation so blind to so much, and those same fathers hide, for their

shame, what we have done, and still more, what we even now both do

and fail to do, for the real nurturers and children of our lands and

sons and daughters of our skies.
