Guest guest
The Ganga KAveri Debate If the Ganges has the highest distinction of the source being the Lord's Thiruvadi (gangai pOdharak kAl nimirtharuLiya kaNNan vandhurai kOIl -Periya thirumozhi 4-2-6), what can kAveri boast of? Neither the source nor the destination is very special. However, AzvAr-s specailly mention great things about kAveri. The adjective prefixed to the great divya dhEsam SriRangam is "ponni sUzh arangam.." Thiruchandha vrutham 119 -Thirumazhisaip piran. The Ganges purifies all, but kAveri is purer than the Ganges. How? Let us refer to svAmi PeriyavAchAn piLLai vyAkyAnam Though Gangai is srEpAdha thErhtam of perumAL , it came down thorugh the tresses of shivA whereas EmperumAn came and settled down amidst the kAveri for ever. The kAveri has got this superior advantage. The words from the VyAkyAnam "AgaiyAlEA oru sikku nARRamum mayirp pAdum vuNDEA; Periya PerumAL naduvEa paLLi koNdirukkayAlum puNidham iREa;..Thiruvadi vudaiyavan thAnEa vandhu padu kAdu kidakkiRA yEARRAm vuNdiREA kAvirikku" Therfore, for the ganges the scent of shivA's tresses are mixed.Whereas, Sri Periya PerumAL out of His volition settled amidst this sacred kAveri river which makes it so sacred. The ganges is the SrepAdha thertham. However, the Lord of that ThiruvAdi Himself has come down here which gives the Greatness for this kAveri Perhaps, that is why our AchAryAs have talked high of kAveri and have ordained us to think of kAveri and vraja at the commencement of ThriuvArAdhanam and the vessel used is also known as ThirukkAVEri. The gangai is a common religious river capable of removing the sins and is also celebrated by other communities also. KAveri is considered at par with vraja as SriRangam is for bhUlOKa vaikunTam. This exalted position is conferred by EmperumAn Himself as He Himself has reclined in midst of this divine waterflow. Apparently, that which has got the divine nexus always is sacred for us but that which has exclusive connexion with the EmperumAn and PuRvachAryAs is sacrosanct. Who can deny the fact of Lord KrshNA appeasing kAverith thAyAr in the form of a divine child (divine child) and conferring her this high status.
