Dear Prabhus -

Please accept my obeisances. All glories to His Divine Grace. Here in

Berkeley, I would be pleased if you could assist us with a burning question:

many times in the early to mid-1970's, hot milk prasadam was often served at

night with bananas, usually refered to as 'hot banana milk' prasadam. This

frequently was served at Henry Street in Brooklyn and later at 55th Street in

Manhattan.

We are now told that the use of bananas in milk offerings is totally

un-bonafide and may even be bad for your health. Before all of our Bengali

cooks go on strike, we would like to resolve this question. Any recollections

or comments you have would be welcome.

Most interesting -- on what basis is this not bonafide or unhealthy?

In both Vancouver & Seattle when I was cooking at the time you mentioned

this was a standard evening prasadam. Since living in Bangladesh for 20-odd

years, where there are Bengali cooks a-plenty, this is the very first I've

heard of such a thing.

Milk & bananas are a traditional favorite here. Besides evening prasadam,

Milk & bananas are often mixed with rice at the end of meals, at breakfast

with either muri (puffed rice) or with khoi (popped rice).

Where do your Bengali cooks come from? Possibly their objection involves

cooking the bananas in the milk, bananas are usually served separately and

then mixed while honoring prasadam.
