Guest guest
Dear Prabhus, PAMHO. AGTSP. I have just sent the following to VNN & Chakra. I'll also make some announcemnt on Global Free Forum. Your servant, Chayadevi Ministry of Cow Protection and Agriculture proposed: MINIMUM COW PROTECTION STANDARDS THE COWS ARE AS IMPORTANT AS THE CITIZENS Krsna Book, Volume 1, Chapter 5 "It is also significant that Vasudeva inquired about the welfare of Nanda Maharaja's animals. The animals, and especially the cows, were protected exactly in the manner of one's children. Vasudeva was a ksatriya, and Nanda Maharaja was a vaisya. It is the duty of the ksatriya to give protection to the citizens of mankind, and it is the duty of the vaisya to give protection to the cows. The cows are as important as the citizens. Just as the human citizens should be given all kinds of protection, so the cows also should be given full protection." BRAHMINICAL CULTURE CANNOT BE MAINTAINED WITHOUT COW PROTECTION Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 8: Chapter 24, Text 5 Purport "Without protection of cows, brahminical culture cannot be maintained; and without brahminical culture, the aim of life cannot be fulfilled." In cooperation with a world-wide committee of cowherds, The Ministry for Cow Protection and Agriculture has formulated "The Minimum Cow Protection Standards" for ISKCON to be presented at the 1999 Mayapur GBC meeting. The purpose of this proposal is to institute a world-wide cow protection minimum standard within ISKCON. The proposal represents a cooperative spirit between the devotees involved, often of diverse views, to come to a general agreement in a joint effort to help prevent any mistreatment of ISKCON cows and help develop cow protection programs that exemplify Srila Prabhupada's vision of cow protection. ISKCON has made significant efforts to protect cows but still mistakes have been made on ISKCON farms in the past which have created present problems that will take time and effort to correct. The proposals will assure that the current problems are rectified in the near future and similar difficulties will not arise again. They can be viewed at the new ISCOWP WEB page which is presently under construction. Just click the NEWS button on that page whose address is: http://www.angelfire.com/co/iscowp . Guest guest
Hare Krsna dasi ******************************* The Web site looks very nice. I think that the letter below should end with the following passage from the introduction to the Standards: *************************** Proposed MINIMUM COW PROTECTION STANDARDS The following is a list of cow protection guidelines written for ISKCON (The International Society for Krsna Consciousness) farms which are offering life time cow protection. Although written for ISKCON, these guidelines can be adapted for all persons who wish to establish cow protection facilities offering lifetime protection. The authors mostly represent Hare Krsna devotees who have many years of experience working within world-wide ISKCON cow protection facilities. Therefore the standards take into consideration varied breeds and geographical differences. The "Recommended" is the ideal, the "Permitted" is an exception to the ideal, and "Not Allowed" is self explanatory. These are internal requirements and they do not supersede whatever local government rules there are. We should follow the higher standard whether it be the Standards or the local government. In transportation, for instance, there are laws of inoculation that MUST be followed. There are further issues that need to be standardized. Rewording, and additions to the standards will be made on a yearly basis after the standards have been in use and feedback has been ascertained. MINIMUM COW PROTECTION STANDARDS The term "cows" is used herein to mean cows, calves, oxen, and bulls. Cows are domestic animals, not wild animals. They are dependent on the care of humans. SECTION 1 COW CARE STANDARDS I) Protection II) Organization of Cow Care Facilities III) Shelter IV) Feeding V) Milking VI) Training Oxen VII) Traveling and Preaching Programs VIII) Use of Krsna's Properties SECTION 2 BREEDING STANDARDS IX) Requirements for Acquiring Cows X) Selection of Breeding Stock XI) Castration XII) Insemination of Cows SECTION 3 MANAGEMENT STANDARDS XIII) Responsibility of Local Community XIV) Local GBC Responsibility XV) Investigation Team ************************************ It should be posted on the Global Free Forum and Varnasrama, with a concluding statement: "Please do not respond to Global Free Forum. Send your comments to the cow conference: cow (AT) com (DOT) bbt.se or to ISKCON's Minister of Agriculture and Cow Protection at iscowp (AT) com (DOT) bbt.se." ************************** The ISKCOWP Website is very attractive. I really like all the pictures of the cows and oxen. Balabhadra prabhu with the team of oxen in front of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. is especially impressive! Two comments on the cow protection standards themselves: When I looked at them, they only showed up as far as Standard V Milking. I assume that since the site is under construction, the remainder is being added. The other thing is that I found the presentation of the standards somewhat different to read. The presentation of yellow letters on black is dramatic, but for a long text, it is hard to read. Black letters on a light color would be much better for such a long text. Also, I think that a Times Roman typeface would be easier to read that a sans-serif script such as Helvetica or Arial. Is it possible that those changes could be made to make it easier to read? Anyway, I think it is great that the text is being sent out, so that all devotees know about it. your servant, Hare Krsna dasi COM: ISCOWP (Balabhadra Dasa & Chaya Dasi - USA) wrote: > [Text 2048853 from COM] > > Dear Prabhus, > > PAMHO. Guest guest
I put something on the Global Free Forum. Did anyone see it. It was before your advice Hare Krsna dasi. You know how it is with this system, you don't receive your own text. If you look on Chakra there is on the front news page an add about the standards. I submitted to VNN also but see nothng on their page about it. They say on their page it takes about 2 weeks. I have yet to put something in the Varnasrama conference. Just want to know if the Global Free Forum add was seen. Yes, I am concerend that the standards are pushed to the back of all proposals and doesn't get dealt with. Since Sesa Prabhu is presenting them, e-mailing him while in Mayapur to remind him would be good idea. Especially if it was not just from me. He leaves this Saturday. Also Vikramuyka Swami, after reading the add said he would check into its progress while in Mayapur if reminded. Sesa.ACBSP (AT) com (DOT) bbt.se & vswami (AT) hotmail (DOT) com If anyone is friends with any GBC they could ask them to look into it. Any other ideas? How can I get VNN attention to put in the add quickly. Your servatn, Chayadevi

At present I send everything to another e-mail address to our webmaster in Malaysia and then he does it while he can using a computer at his work place. The text you view is the one that transferred to him correctly. I will talk to him about the possible changes but it is not likely that these changes wil hapeen real soon. The background and font color changes are more likely to be able to change. Thank you for viewing and giving your opinion. I have Internet Explorer and I could read everything fine. How long did it take to switch? Sometimes, I have to wait a second and then the colors all come into place and other times it happens real fast. Perhaps we should change the coloring of fonts and background, but I don't know how soon that could be done. Your servant, Chayadevi

Vikramuyka Swami said that he wanted to be reporting on the happenings at the GBC meetings every so few days and that is why he published our cow standards add quickly. So if other devotees wrote articles to Chakra about the necessity of these standards he would be likely to print them timely.
