CALCUTTA, Sept. 3

INDIAN Leather Products Association (ILPA) has urged the Centre to take

steps to stop smuggling of cattle, skin and hides into Bangladesh, according an

ILPA release issued here.

Mr. Paresh Rajda, ILPA President, quoting Ms. Maneka Gandhi, Union

Minister for Social Welfare, said that 15,000 cattle were being smuggled into

Bangladesh daily through the border in West Bengal. According to him, skin and

raw hides were also being taken to Bangladesh and Nepal from India through

clandestine trade.

``If such smuggling of cattle as well as raw hides and skin were

permitted for long, it would have serious impact on the Indian livestock

population and leather industry,'' the release stated.
