THROUGH THE EYES OF A CALF

They're different, those cows. Skinny, most of them, with two skins, and

their heads emerging out of the outer skin. Sometimes, on hot days, other

parts poke out too. They walk on their back legs.

They make strange sounds too. And you should see their hooves. I did and I

was in shock! They must be really embarrassed to have hooves like that,

because they stick them inside a kind of hard skin cover, and clop around in

it. Can't say I blame them.

Another thing is they are SO lazy, because whenever they have to go anywhere

further than the length of our paddock, they hop inside one of the mouths of

this thing, which has four twirling eyeballs for feet...wierd! Not only

that, but it makes a noise and smell worse than an old granny with the

belches...

My mum says to be careful of them, as they treat you nicely one day, and are

horrible the next. All my brothers were taken away by them when they were

babies, still drinking milk. All the time my mother was crying for them to

come back...

They never did.

Sometimes, my mother still cries for them. I go up to her and lick her face,

to let her know, "Its OK, you still have me." I try to make her feel better.

After a while she stops crying, but her eyes look sad.

I don't know what happened to my brothers. My friends say these other cows

killed them, that they kill all our type of cow, when we get a bit old.

They kill, and then they eat us. And there is nothing we can do to stop

them.

They know how to undo our gates, and we don't. Sometimes, we are so scared

we find a gap in the fence and escape. But they find us and bring us back.

I know the day will come when I will be taken away for killing and being

eaten. I just wish those cows would just learn to be happy eating grass, or

other stuff like the yummy things that grow on trees, instead of killing to

eat. Maybe some of them do.

I can't think of anyone more horrible than these furless, beady-eyed,

two-skinned cows, who treat us nicely to get our mother's milk, then later

on eat us for dinner. Although they don't have sharp teeth and claws, they

are more dangerous and cruel than anything.
